to the democrats in the next presidential election is governor chris christie of new jersey. recently the nra took out an add saying that president obama is a hypocrite because he sends his children to school protected by armed guards and that he doesn't want armed guards at other schools. christie didn't like that ad by the nra and said this. >> don't be dragging people's children into this. it's wrong. and i think it demeans them. and it makes them less of a valid, trusted source of information on the real issues that confront this debate. >> so what did you think? >> well, a reasonable objection to the nra, remember, he is from new jersey, a blue state. he has got to get reelected this year. and he has a legitimate beef with the ad. i frankly think the underlying point of the nra ad accurate one. there is is elite in america which is comfortable with having guards in private schools and is dismissive of the idea that we ought to have people with, you know, law enforcement officials with guns available in other schools as well. is he very, has a lot of people in public life are sensitive about a

. >> these meetings weren't just some photo-op. even the nra attended. after the meetings, it trashed the agenda as an attack on the second amendment. walmart, probably the biggest gun seller, was shamed, i guess, into showing up. retailer originally said executives couldn't attend. they had scheduling difficult s difficulties. ative course of criticism, they changed their mind and did show up with the attorney general. after gaining background earlier this month, gun stocks were under pressure again this week. that's right, investors are worried washington is actually going to do something. let's not forget that at its core selling guns in america is about making money. richard feldman is president of t the, former nra lobbyist. will cain is a cnn contributor. do you think it will be concrete action? i know no one's mind was changed there. but is it the beginning of something different this time? >> well, clearly, the horrific events in newtown were a game changer. what concrete changes in the law are going to be really remains to be seen. as to the firearm industry, which i represented during

and the pew research center shows 60% of americans support a ban on assault weapons. we know that the nra has rejected any idea or notion of a ban on assault weapons and even some congressmen and members of the house of representatives and senate would oppose a ban on assault weapons seeing it as extreme. a few democrats used that language. nevertheless, if the president did not include a comprehensive plan which addresses this issue of high magazine -- high capacity magazines and assault weapons, telling the american public the newtown tragedy is the most difficult day of your presidency, if you don't take big action then those really are just words. >> i think that's exactly right. and i think that what you're basically saying is that part of what the president is going to announce will be symbolic and not have that great of a chance of passage and part of it will be practical measures that do have at least some slim chance of making it through this congress. you see in those polls that the idea of universal background checks and of closing the gun show loophole, a much more of a gaping exe

president said he saw emerging consensus in some areas here. the nra said they were disappointed what is really going on here? >> that's right. that's essentially what we expected, the nra saying they wanted to come and listen to what the administration is talking about, but certainly the administration is looking for some tough guidelines here, to prevent violence in the future. so, some of the things that the vice president says has been emerging from the discussion. he pointed out these are not his recommendations, but what he's hearing from all of these meetings is, at the top of the list, universal background checks. not closing loopholes at sales, but universal background checks, and a ban on high capacity ammunition clips. these are two things that the vice president says has been emerging at the top of the list from the discussions he has been holding. but the nra obviously pushing back on this. clearly disappointed. disappointed, they said, by how these meetings have less to do with protecting the children and more to do with "the agenda, the attack on the second amendment, w

at the beginning of the show is happening. and i think the nra has -- and i guess rachel maddow made this point the other night. the nra, it has been so long that they have had to argue this issue that they're kind of shocked at how much support, once this issue is framed the way it is now, which is let's take some reasonable steps to prevent something like newtown from happening again. a lot of people including gun owners are on that side. >> right, and i think the freakouts helped to make the point from the other side. when you see somebody speaking straight to camera saying if i don't get what i want i will start to kill people. your first reaction is whoa, i wouldn't want that person to have a gun. it is like they went so far to make a point that they made the other point. >> that is why i wanted to show people, when you have freakouts you usually look freaky in doing that. >> it is a good rule. >> they said in december that schools should deploy armed officers, listen to this, both of you. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. we need to have every sin

as the nra's wayne lapierre. >> you must act. be bold, be courageous. americans are counting on you. >> as the rest of the country comes to the realization, something must be done to prevent gun violence. the nra and the allies in the republican party are digging in. we'll look at what president obama can and can't accomplish on gun staft at the top of the program. >>> plus does president obama want a deal on illegal immigrati immigration? which would be huge on his legacy. or does he want the issue hanging around so republicans get punished at the polls by latino voters. we'll get some answers tonight. >>> and it may be last call for the tea party. consider this. republicans with national ambitions claim they want tome to stop being the stupid party. conservatives are working with democrats on illegal immigration. and fox news parts ways with sarah palin. dana milbank says it's all evidence the tea party is losing steam and he's with us tonight. >>> plus the boy scouts of america are considering dropping their ban on gay volunteers and members. it's another sign of the progress thi
